Arkansas Trails, Campgrounds, Trail Rides, Overnight Hosts
Devil's Den state park
Devil's Den state park: 20 Miles, 501-761-3325
There is a Horse Camp which accommodates both tents and RV's (or trailers).
Electric, water, bath house with showers, etc., picnic table, charcoal
grills, lantern stands. Horse are required to be picketed, but there
are plenty of trees to run picket lines.
Submitted By: Scott Horner Click Here
Since Devil's Den Park has the oldest public trails they are well worn. Go to the
Visitors Center there and for 50 cents a person can purchase a map of the whole
lower valley which contains many more trails both within the park and outside the
park.
Horsemen should not use the Winslow exit off of 540, they should instead use the
West Fork Highway 170 exit off from 540. Hwy.74 will not accommodate horses in
trailers. It is much to steep & very crooked.
They have 13 cabins (about 1 mile away from the Horse Camp) that can be rented in
addition to about 35 Horsemen Camp sites.
The Yellow Horse Trail is a trail that anyone can ride at a walk in about 1 hour and
30 minutes. A novice rider should feel comfortable on this trail.
The Red Trail is 7 miles long (Holt Ridge Trail) and in some places steep. It is a
bit more challenging either the horse or the rider needs some experience on this one.
The Green Trail is 8 miles long (Vista Point) and has a gorgeous view of the whole
valley. It requires riding on some ledges and some steep spots in it.

Bear Creek Horse Camp
Bear Creek Horse Camp is located about 5 miles off of Hwy 7 south, a few
miles north of Jessieville, AR. There is a Ranger Station outside of
Jessieville that has maps of the horse trails. Horse Camp is primitive, but
does have some level sites for trailer camping. Because the camp is so
primitive, there isn't a lot of other traffic on the trails (i.e., 4-wheelers
or mountain bikers). There are several miles of trails making different loops
for all kinds of riding.

Sylamore Experimental Forest
Mountain View area: Sylamore Experimental Forest has about 85 miles of marked horse trail consisting of old
logging roads. However, Be brave, Get off the beaten path. Stop at the Forest Service
office on your way through Mountain View, and purchase a Norfork Quadrant Map, and a
Calico Rock Quadrant map. Plan a trip around these maps. Best time to ride is early
spring when the dogwoods are blooming, or Early Fall when the leaves are changing.
Some of the highlights are, Sugarloaf Tower, Salt Peter Cave, Cap Fork Creek, Cole Fork
Creek, Livingston Creek, and Bearhead Creek, trails, and numerous waterfalls.
There are thousands of acres here to ride. If you get off the beaten path you are sure to
see some great sites!!! You can camp on Merrill Ridge Road (Bring you own water) Bear
Road at highway 5 (water only when the creek is running), or for the Cabin & Hot Tub

Clifty Canyon, Near Big Flat AR
Big Flat: Clifty Canyon is a remarkable place. Nothing is marked here. A GPS is a plus.
But for the avid trail rider this is one of the best trails I have ever ridden in the
Nation. There are 3 prongs to it that sort of look like a turkeys foot on the map.
There is a trail that runs along all 3 creeks that make up the canyon and All 3 end at
the Barkshed Bridge.
The best ride is from Sand Road Parking area described below, ride towards the bridge
about 1/2 of a mile to Ashley Road (unmarked but the first very wide trail) turn right
ride down the hill to Cap Fork Creek and turn left to (downstream).Ride this trail until
you come to the first creek on your right, then ride a short distance up the creek to an
amazing gushing waterfall that runs all year round.
Ride back out and continue towards the bridge. In about 2 miles you will come to an
amazing bluff that over hangs you 100 feet and you ride under it for about 900 feet.
This Bluff is Newcome Rockhouse Bluff, and yes a long time ago this family lived a
summer there and this is how it gets it's name. It is an amazing place that many do not
get to see.
In about 3 miles you will come to Barkshed Bridge. This is a great place to tie up and
eat a sack lunch on the picnic tables acrossed the bridge. On this trail you cross Cap
Fork Creek 33 times.
If you want to go a different way home ride under the bridge, and find the Cole Fork
trail on the Opposite side of the bank from the campground, and a little upstream from
the bridge.
Ride this trail about 3 miles. On the WEST side of the creek, the trail comes to a Y,
take the left fork, (the right fork leads to the third prong Stewart Creek and this is
where the huge Natural Bridge is) ride this left fork trail for 3/4 of a mile and you
will come into a primitive campground. Ride up this road (1125) and when you come back
onto Barkshed road turn right back to your vehicle about 1 1/2 more miles.
Clifty Canyon is located off Highway 341. To get there From Highway 14 turn onto 341
towards Norfork, drive about 5.5 miles to Barkshed Road (there is an Orange Sign that
says "Barkshed Bridge Closed") Drive down Barkshed Road 1.5 miles to Sand Road
(Unmarked but the first good sized pull off big enough to get 3 good sized horse
trailers in there) unload there.
Stewart Creek trail (described above) is rough and faint. But for the determined rider
this Natural Bridge is big enough for 50 people to sit under and eat lunch at the same
time and certainly adds to the amazing place list of this Canyon.
You can camp down at the primitive campground off Barkshed Road 3 miles down on #1125,
but BEFORE you go down there with your horse trailer, drive just your truck down there
first to see if it will go around the curves. For the Cabin & Hot Tub Dwellers,
the nearest accommodations for Horses and Riders contact Tall Pine Horse Resort
www.trailriding.net for more information on all of the above.
