McCrystal Campground, Valle Vidal Unit, Carson National Forest

There are two access routes, one from just east of Cimarron, NM, and the other from Costillo, NM.
The eastern access from Cimarron involves about 30 miles of private and Forest road. It is washboardy and rocky, but not the worst we have been over by far. The campground has tie outs and hay racks but no pens.
There is plenty of water for horses, with a large drinker at each end of the campground. There are a few trails, and many open valleys and meadows; some old logging roads and ranch roads.
The terrain is easy, and this year there was water in all the canyons for the horses. Scenery is fantastic.
The vault toilets were deplorablle this year(2004) and I have sent complaints to the Forest Supervisor. It is a fee area, and well worth the $5/day fee. It is really a must see area. At over 8,000 feet the nights are in high forties to low fifties in August, with days in seventies.
The western access from Costillo is a better road, and passes the Cimarron Campground. It has potable water and pipe pens; is over 9,200 feet elevation so is colder than McCrystal. The area to ride is also spectacular, but steeper.

The Valle is located in NE New Mexico about 35 miles north of the town of Red River. The Valle has two horse campgrounds - McCrystal, at 8400 ft, and Cimarron, at 9200 ft. To access these two campground, drive 4 miles NE of the town of Cimarron on Hwy 64, turn north on a State maintained gravel road and go 35 miles. The climb up the mountain is gradual and relatively easy. However, it is recommended you have good tires and that the tires be inflated to the maximum capacity to prevent tire damage and flats from the gravel road. The first campsite is McCrystal, located adjacent to the McCrystal Creek. The campground has pit toilets and water tanks for horses (no potable water). You may use ties, picket lines or electric fence corrals for the horses.
You will have access to all levels of riding - open meadows among the grazing cattle to rough mountain timber.
There is considerable activity in the area from hikers, fishermen and Boy Scouts.

The second campground, Cimmarron, is another 7 miles up the mountain. That 7 miles is somewhat extreme with a steep climb and several switchbacks. The campground is not as level as McCrystal so you may need to look things over to find a site suitable for your camper. The campground has pit toilets and running potable water. They also have some horse corrals and you can use electric corrals or picket lines. Again, the area offers all levels of riding, from open meadows among the grazing cattle to extreme, rough mountain timber.
There is a camp host at Cimmaron. This area may also be accessed from the west by driving over the top of the mountain from the town of Costilla past the Ski Rio ski resort.

Tres Piedras: We have just completed 2 - 1 bedroom adobe territorial houses with block horse sheds and corrals for people who love to travel with their horses. Our land borders the Carson National Forest in Tres Piedras, New Mexico.
Trails are abundant right from the backyard! You can ride for 2 hours or endless hours!
You will see Elk and if you are lucky may see some of the wild horse herd that has made this area their home. We are 30 minutes west of Taos, New Mexico.

Cimarron Canyon State Park -- Maverick Campground -- The trail head is approximately 1.5 miles north of the campground. To access you must ride along one side US 64 on one side and cross the highway at the bridge. US 64 is a heavily traveled road with logging trucks going by about every 30 minutes

Santa Rosa State Park -- the Corps of Engineers is developing an equestrian campground at the Los Tanos primitive camping area. Tent-pad sites are already installed. There is one water hydrant and two 10' pipe corrals were recently installed. COE plans to add more corrals if camp ground use increases. At the present time, there are no discernable camp site areas for RVs or horse trailers.

Valle Tio Vinces Campground
The Valle Tio Vinces Campground, Gila National Forest, is on the continental divide between Quemado and Apache Springs, NM. Best access is from Hwy 60, nine miles east of Quemado, then south on Forest Road 214(which is not well marked since it starts out on private land). There is a sign on the access from NM12 between Datil and Apache Springs, NM, but the road is very rocky and rough. The camp has a clean vault toilet, pipe corrals, but contrary to other reports, no water. The spring is dry and the drinkers non functional.
There are logging roads up the canyons and open timbered slopes. There is even a cell phone tower on the next mountain! We saw very little other traffic in the area in our three days there.
On the way in or out, or both, check out the pies in the Daily Pie restaurant in Pietown, on Hwy 60.

Socorro: Trails camping PH 505-835-0412

Gallup: I own/operate a 10 bedroom lodge in west-central New Mexico just east of Gallup in the Zuni Mountains. Cibola National Forest comprising the majority of the mountain range, and has numerous dirt/gravel roads, fire trails and old logging/railroad trails through the National Forest.
The National Forest is 360,000acres, and just north of the Gila Wilderness area--in fact, it extends into the Gila/Mogollon rim area. Although I don't do the trips myself, lots of nice mountain and forest scenery right here in the area. Some local horse rentals possible. We have stables and support for up to 10 horses.

For safety reasons, horses are prohibited at Lazy Lagoon.

Clovis: Ned Houk Memorail Park north of Clovis. From 21st St in Clovis, go north on 209 about 6.8 miles, past CR17, and just north of mile marker 8. There are 2 entrances off of 209, and they are not very far apart. Turn right (east) into the park, then right (south).
Follow the paved road to the back of the park until it ends (about 2 miles), and you will be at the head of 2 trails. The rules are posted there. The trails are shared with hikers, motorcycles, bicycles, and recreational vehicles. There are water hydrants, covered pic-nic tables, play grounds, and several small ponds stocked with fish.

Roy: Mills Canyon just 10 miles north of Roy NM is a very suprising find. There is a cleche road off of the highway leading to the canyon.
The last 2 miles into the canyon is very winding, steep, and narrow.
Camping on top is best for long vehicles or goosenecks; however, there is a primitave campground at the bottom. It is very scenic, and very hot in the summer (autumn is awesome!).

Albuquerque: I have a nice facility just two miles from I-40 exit 203, forty five miles East of Albuqerque.
The RocnCRranch is a great stop for the cross country hauler. We boast a nine thousand square foot sweetwater barn. We have 12x12 and 12x24 bedded stalls. We also have an in door round pen a six horse walker and 16 hundred acres of trails to ride.

There is a beautiful place called Copper Canyon just north of the town of Abiquiu on Hwy. 84. The trail starts just behind the Abiquiu Elementary School in the arroyo. Park your rig behind the school and follow the main arroyo. It turns left and passes the grey rock formation. As you continue to follow the arroyo up you will be treated to ever changing colors in the rock formations. This area is especially pretty right after a summer rainfall as the colors seem to jump out from the rocks. There are parts of an old jeep trail through the area that have been washed away due to the arroyo. Continue to the cliffs and beyond. Near the end of the canyon there is a flowing spring. Water your horses here, but be sure to bring potable water.
To get there, follow Hwy. 84/285 north from Santa Fe. Follow any signs through Espanola that direct you to Chama. Once through Espanola, you will be on 84/285 for about 7 miles. Hwy 285 and 84 will split at the junction in Hernandez, continue on Hwy 84, straight ahead.
From there the school will be about 16 miles. Be sure to bring a camera.

Pecos: Located 20 miles north of the town of Pecos, NM on hwy 63. The road to the campground is paved until the last mile. That last part is well maintained. Hwy 63 parallels the Pecos River from the town of Pecos north to the campground. While the road is paved it is winding and narrow. The road is infested with little bitty SUVs, containing trout fishermen, all driving 60 mph up and down the mountain. The campground is at the south edge of the Pecos Wilderness and trails lead out of the campground in several directions. There are pit toilets, running water and horse corrals. Electric pens may be used.

Glenwood: I found this lodging in the great outdoors of Glenwood, New Mexico (southwest) and it is an authentic family homestead. Accommodations include an adobe home, guest houses and cabin. Horse boarding and an RV park are available.
The grounds are beautiful and are like a New Mexico farm and horse ranch. It's located by the Mogollon mountains and is right in the middle of area attractions such as the Mogollon Catwalk, 3 ghost towns, hot springs, the Gila Wilderness area and the Gila Cliff dwellings. The family that runs it is, well, just like family.

There's coffee and tea in all the guest houses/cabins and I think they all have kitchenettes. Authentic home-cooked New Mexican meals are available if you ask the owner about it and are served outdoors picnic-style. Good for kids OR couples wishing privacy thanks to the arrangement and location of the various accommodations. Mule rides, horse trails and family games are fun to take advantage of. Lots of personal touches from the owners who are awesome.

Bluewater Lake State Park in Prewitt

3,000 acres of wilderness is situated on the north flank of the Zuni Mountains.
Gate hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
28 miles west of Grants via I-40 and NM 412.
Horseback riding and camping is allowed in Section 4 of the NW quadrant on the Prewitt side of the lake in areas 10 feet away from the lake.
Lake access for watering is permitted. Horseback riding is also allowed in the 4 undeveloped parcels on the west end of the lake. Access to this area may be obtained through the Thoreau access off state highway 612.

Brantley Lake State Park near Carlsbad

The gate to this 3,000 acre wilderness is open 24 hours. 12 miles north of Carlsbad on 285, 27 miles off of Artesia. Fees are $3.00 a day and $6.00 per night for camping.
Immediate cleanup of your horse is mandatory. You must bring rakes, shovels and bags. No flake hays allowed in park. You must feed pellets or other bagged feed. Bring your own water. No swimming of horses allowed in the lake.
There are mapped riding/hiking trails and unmapped "two-track" roads that horses are permitted on.

Caballo Lakes near Truth or Consequences

16 miles south of Truth or Consequences on I-25. 5,300 acre wilderness area. Horseback riding is allowed on the trail beginning at the Williamsburg bend and proceeds south to the Palomas Canyon area. The ride is about two hours long and meanders along the Rio Grande. This trail is not marked. Horses are also allowed north of the fence line at Veteran's Point, and not allowed south of this point.
There are no corrals, so they must be tied to the horse trailer or provide your own corrals. Staking out is permitted if you make it very secure. Your camping area must be kept clean and it is mandatory that you clean up after your horse.
First gate south on 187 from T or C. Fees are $3.00 a day and $6.00 per night camping.
Two-week maximum limit.
Horses are allowed on the north side of the lake only, near Williamsburg.
Horses are not allowed in the developed area of the park.

Cimarron Canyon State Park in Ute Park

3 miles east of Eagle Nest on US 64. Gates are open 24 hours. This 33,116 acre wilderness area is part of the Colin Neblett Wildlife Reserve - the largest wildlife area in the state.
Horseback riding is allowed. Horses must be kept away from the campsites. Visitors with horses must keep them in corrals provided near the Maverick and Tolby campgrounds.

Clayton Lake State Park in Seneca

15 miles north of Clayton on NM 370. Gate hours are 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. to this 5,1000 acre wilderness.
Horseback riding is allowed on the north trail and at the north camping area. Visitors may have horses in the primitive area, which is located on the north side of the park.

Coyote Creek State Park in Guadalupita

This state park is located in the Sangre de Cristo mountains 14 miles north of Mora on NM 434. It covers 80 acres of wilderness. Gate is open 24 hours.
Horseback riding is permitted in the park. Overnight stays are allowed provided that hay and horse droppings are well cleaned up before departing.

El Vado Lake State Park near Tierra Amarilla

14 miles southwest of Tierra Amarilla on NM 112 in New Mexico's northern mountains, it has a five and a half mile trail along the Rio Chama which connects El Vado Lake with Heron Lake. The wilderness area covers 1,730 acres.
Horses are allowed at the north end of the main park near the trail heard. Both riding and camping are allowed. Horseback riding and camping are also permitted on the north end of the lake and the peninsula, which can be accessed via state road 95 next to Heron Lake State Park

Fenton Lake State Park in Jemez Springs

33 miles northwest of San Ysidro via NM 44 and NM 4. The gate is open during the summer from 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and during the winter from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
This spectacular 700 acre wilderness can be seen in the movie "The Man Who Fell To Earth" where it was filmed in the mid-1970s.
Horses are allowed in designated campsites (#11, #25 & #28). Horseback riding is allowed on main roads to access adjacent forest service trails. Riding is also permitted on the cross-country ski trail as long as there is no snow on the trail.

Hyde Memorial State Park near Santa Fe

12 miles northeast of Santa Fe via Hyde Park Road/NM 475. The gate hours to this 350 acre wilderness in the Santa Fe National Forest located in the Sangre de Cristo mountains are from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Horses are allowed for overnight stay only, provided that the site is kept clean and all droppings are immediately disposed of. No horses are allowed at the RV/electric area. No horseback riding is allowed in the park.

Leasburg Dam State Park in Radium Springs

15 miles north of Las Cruces on I-25. Leasburg Dam was constructed in 1908 and is the oldest diversion dam in the state. The canal system irrigates crops as far south as Las Cruces.
The gate hours to this 140 acre wilderness are 7:00 a.m. to sunset daily.
Horses are allowed for overnight stay, only at the Juniper Circle primitive area.
No horseback riding is allowed.

13 miles northwest of Mountainair on NM 55. Gate hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Horseback riding is allowed on the trail leading to the forest service trail, which starts at the west side of the park next to the group area. Overnight stays are allowed provided area is left clean and all horse droppings are picked up immediately.

Navajo Lake State Park in Navajo Dam

25 miles east of Bloomfield via US 64 and NM 511. The gate is open 24 hours. This 21,000 acre wilderness area boasts the state's second largest lake next to Elephant Butte. There is also evidence of the earliest known village in the Southwest.
No horses are allowed in developed areas. Camping with horses and horseback riding is permitted on Bureau of Land Management property adjacent to Navajo Lake State Park.
The BLM has a designated horse use camping area located a half mile south of the dam on NM Highway 539. This area is open to the public for access to the BLM designated Navajo Lake Horse Trail which encompasses both BLM and Park lands in the Frances Canyon area. Horses are also allowed in most undeveloped areas of the Park.
They are not allowed in the San Juan River area of the park from the dam downstream to the lower Park boundary.

Oliver Lee Memorial State Park near Alamogordo

10 miles south of Alamogordo on US 54. The gate hours are from 7:00 a.m. to sunset for this 200 acre wilderness that is set against the Sacramento Mountains. The park also features a fully restored 19th century ranch house.
Horseback riding is allowed in the proposed ranch house area. Camping is permitted in this area only. There are no designated trails for horseback riding.

The 270 acre park along the Rio Grande bosque is the second most visited park in the state.
Horses are permitted on the lower levee road (north and south) of the park.

Santa Rosa Lake State Park near Santa Rosa

7 miles north of Santa Rosa on access road. The gate to this 500 acre wilderness located on the Pecos River is open 24 hours.
Horseback riding is allowed at Rocky Point and Los Tanos when the area is open.
Call park rangers for further information. There are no designated trails. Camping is also available in this area.

Storrie Lake State Park near Las Vegas

4 miles north of Las Vegas on NM 518. Gate hours to this 80 acre wilderness are 6 a.m. to sunset from April through September and 7 a.m. to sunset from October through March.
With the arrival of the Santa Fe Railway in 1879, Las Vegas and the surrounding area became a hangout for Doc Holliday, Billy the Kid and Wyatt Earp.
Horses are allowed for overnight stay. They are permitted in the fenced-in area that is located on the southwest side of the park, approximately 150 yards west of the playground area. Visitors must contact the park ranger for specific area, details and further information and directions. Horses must be tied to your trailer or in your own portable corrals.

Sugarite Canyon State Park near Raton

10 miles northeast of Raton on NM 526. The gate to this 3,600 acre wilderness locate on the Colorado border is open 24 hours.
Horseback riding is allowed at the park except on the nature trail, Coal Camp trail and the developed campgrounds. Campers with horses must keep horses at the Soda Pocket campground. Horses must be kept in the corrals provided. There are only 4 available, so reservations are suggested. Call the park manager for further information.

Sumner Lake State Park near Fort Sumner

16 miles northwest of Fort Sumner via US 84 and NM 203. The gate to this 6,700 acre wilderness is open 24 hours.
Horseback riding is allowed in the Alamogordo Creek campground which is located on the east side. Overnight camping is permitted in this area also. Directions to horse area - off interstate 84, take state road 203 for about 6 miles, take a right before crossing the dam, go past the east campground and past the second cattleguard.

Ute Lake State Park near Logan

3 miles west of Logan on NM 540. This 1,500 acre wilderness is located on the Canadian river and the gates are open 24 hours.
Horseback riding is allowed at the Mine Canyon area and at Rogers Camp area.
Horses are also permitted for overnight stay in these areas. Turn off to Mine Canyon is located approximately 14 miles northeast of Tucumcari. Rogers Park is locate approximately 4 miles off State Road 39 on State Road 540. Call park manager for further details and directions.

Villanueva State Park in Villanueva

31 miles southwest of Las Vegas via I-25 and NM 3. The gate to this 1,600 acre wilderness along the Pecos River is open 24 hours.
Horseback riding is permitted at the upper mesa area, to get to the area one must take State Highway 3 to County Road B28A to the left towards El Cerrito. Signs indicate State Park Land. Camping with horses is allowed at the primitive camping area at site 3A.

East of Las Cruces, West of El Paso on I-10 at the first rest stop in Las Cruces are 2 outdoor stalls, no cover, some shade from trees. Stalls are about 15'x15'. As you get off the interstate there is a "Y" in the road, head to the left away from the welcome station about 150 feet. The stalls are on the right. Check with the welcome center to see if any charges apply - looks like they are free.

Las Cruces: We live on Highway 85, the old road to Hatch out of Las Cruces, Nm. We are two miles south of Ft. Seldon.
For travelers who are using I-25, exit 19, go to the end of the road which ends in a T, turn left, south, two miles on Hwy 85. We are on the corner of Fossil View and I-85. We have 6 stalls and a turnout, for someone who's horses need a rest on their trip. We have red metal roofs on our house and on the barn.

Chama: There is a nice motel/lodge in Chama, New Mexico, that has a small stall with attached large pen that they will let you use for overnight stay. I believe the name of it is El Meson Lodge and it's right on the highway in Chama. There are restaurants close by. I've stayed there a couple of times and the managers have been very pleasant and accomodating, even with late night arrival.

Located between Roswell and Tatum. Take Hwy.380 east out of Roswell and go approx. 45 miles until you get to the top of the Caprock. Turn south on Hwy. 172 toward Maljamar. Go south 12 miles. The turn is between mile markers 17 and 18. Turn west over the cattle guard and go about 2 miles down the dirt road until you come to two water storage tanks on the edge of the Caprock. That is where you will camp. If coming from Tatum, go West on Hwy. 380 approx. 28 miles to Hwy. 172 toward Maljamar and follow above directions.

Scheduled rides leave in the morning and return in the evening. You will stay in your camper or RV at the primitive campsite with your horse at your trailer. There are a few pens available at first come basis.
Located west of Tucumcari. Take I-40 West out of Tucumcari. Go 8 miles to the Palomas exit 321. Go left over the overpass past Stuckys to the frontage road which is Historic route 66. Turn right at the stop sign and go 1 mile to the next overpass. Turn right again at overpass and proceed North on dirt road for 2 miles to the Ranch Headquarters.
You will go past Headquarters through red gate, continuing North through another gate and on to the camping area appros. 3 miles North of Headquarters.
